The Superintendent’s Excellence Award was presented to six South' port Elementary School students at a banquet held at Leland Middle School. Dr. Ralph Johnston presented awards to (front row) Joseph Lineberger, Rebecca Cochran and Nicole Peglow from the fourth grade, and (back row) Justin Bass, Kimberly Yates and Chaundra Snyder from the fifth grade. The students were chosen on the bass of academics and overall achievements. Throughout the 1992-93 school year students in Faye Lloyd's first grade class at Southport Elementary School and Esther Smith's first grade class at Lincoln Primary School exchanged cards, letters, poems, personal vital statistics and a classroom video. Just as the school vear was endUg, the pen pals met for the first time at Town Creek Township District Park for a dinosaur dig, lunch and story time. Ferrell and Erich B. Vereen of Long Beach; Kenneth L. Stone of Supply. Teacher exchange Beth Pupp, a Spanish instructor at West Brunswick High School, has been selected for a year-long teacher exchange with Olga Avalos of Chile. The exchange has been approved by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. It will begin in July, when the teachers meet for orientation in Chile, and will end in July, 1994. St. Mary’s honors Sarah Corbitt, daughter of Thomas and Elaine Corbitt of Yaupon Beach, has been named to the high school' honor roll for the spring semester at Saint Mary's. She recently completed the 11th grade at Saint Mary’s, a two-year college and upper level preparatory school in Raleigh. To be eligible for the honor roll, a student must maintain a 3.25 grade point average on a 4.0 scale while maintaining the status of "student in good standing" with the school. WCU Dean’s List Kerry Fulton Cumbee of Rt 3, Supply, is among 821 students named to the Western Carolina Uni versity Dean’s List for spring semester 1993. To qualify for the Dean’s List, stu dents must achieve at least a 3.5 gTade-point average out of a pos sible 4.0 on a regular semester's work of not less than 12 hours, ex cluding remedial courses, with no grades of D or F. UNCG Dean’s List Two Brunswick County residents were named to the Dean's List for the spring semester at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Rachel L. Summer school begins at 8:30 am. Monday, June 21, at Supply Elementary School. *We have a large number of students who will be attending,1* said Wi liam Dctrie, assistant principal of Shalloue Middle School who is serving as summer school director. About 200 students in grades three, six and eight scored below the 25th percentile on the N. C. Minimum Skills Diagnostic Test Another 225 from grades six, seven and eight whose absences during ihe school year ex ceeded the ten-day limit set by the board of education will be making up day's they missed. Classes will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Monday through Thurs day. Students will get a week of vacation midway through the session, July 5-9, and summer school w ill wrap up by July 29. Lunch will be provided at no cost to students. Fourteen buses will transport students from across the county to Supply Elementary School. Detrie said more buses may be added to alleviate some of the longer routes. All buses will begin their routes at 6:30 a.m. Third grade teachers will be Nona Baker and Melissa Padgett of Lincoln Primary School, Nancy Wemyss and Snowree Hewett of Union Elementary’, Kelli Suggs of Bolivia Elementary and Beverly Hewett of Southport Elementary. Sixth grade teachers will be Sandra Kaufhold and Ivory Parker of South port Elementary', Eva Smith of Supply Elementary, Janice Gore of Shal lotte Middle, and Brenda Russ of Waccamaw Elementary, Ophelia Keaton of Leland Middle is an alternate teacher. Eighth grade teachers are Clifton Jones of Supply Elementary, Patricia Norris of Leland Middle, Susan Bolinger of West Brunswick High, Cher ryanna Basinger and Pauline Hewett of Shallotte Middle and Ann Mcdlin of South Brunswick Middle. Kathleen Thompson of South Brunswick High is an alternate. Lachawn Daniels of Leland Middle and Jean Kaczynski of Lincoln Pri mary will serve as resource teachers. Teacher assistants are Shelia Huskins, Cynthia Reaves, Incatha Marlowe, Joyce Cox, Gloria Joyner, Carol Coffey, Linda Graham-Bell, Essie Vaughn. Doretha Johnson will serve as media assistant.
